The Girl Before, by J.P. Delaney

The Girl Before - Review

Title: The Girl Before
Author: J.P. Delaney
Genre: Fiction

I know this is going to shock you, but I have a Problem with this book. Both protagonists are female, but I could tell without Googling that J.P. Delaney is a man. Some men cannot write women.

The premise is intriguing - an egotistical architect designs a super-modern house and rents it for cheap, but there is a list of crazy conditions that you have to agree to. For instance, none of your possessions can be on the floor or counters. I WOULD BE EVICTED IMMEDIATELY.

The Girl Before alternates between two protagonists - Emma and Jane. Emma is the previous occupant, and she is now dead. We watch Emma and Jane's parallel stories unfold while we worry about Jane's mortality and her laundry.

It's interesting. But the premise of the book depends on multiple women being irresistibly attracted to the architect, who is a grade A asshole. And the book acts like that's okay? That's not okay, Book.

Full disclosure: I got a free copy from the very nice people at Random Canada. I love you Random!

  1. So it's like 'The life changing magic of tidying up' fan fiction? 😄
