Title: The Winner's Curse
Author: Marie Rutkoski
I bought this book SOLELY because I saw it on Instagram a million times and the Bookstagrammers wore me down. The blurb on the back is super boring. It goes something like this: "Sometimes you get what you want BUT IT'S NOT LIKE YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD BE." Yawn!
The first third of the book moves very slowly. I regretted judging this book by its gorgeous front cover instead of its dull back cover. Kestrel is very rich, her father is a general, she buys a slave (Arin) on impulse because she likes his spunky nature. Kestrel and Arin proceed to dance around each other at her mansion, blah blah secrets blah forbidden attraction fishcakes.
THEN Arin starts a rebellion. People are going to die. MAYBE KESTREL. Maybe her friends! Thankfully not babies, though - thanks for letting babies off the hook, Marie. Anyhow, at this point the action REALLY picks up, so keep reading!
The book is inspired by the Romans and their enslavement of the Greeks, which makes me like it more because I wasted a lot of time with Classics courses in university.
I finished this and then INSTANTLY wanted to read the second book, which is already out. I also want this to be made into a movie because Pretty Dresses.
Full disclosure: I bought it with my own money because Instagram told me to.
