Title: Shadow Scale
Author: Rachel Hartman
If you read this blog regularly, you already know that Seraphina is the best book EVER.
In Shadow Scale, the sequel, Seraphina is on a mission to find the other half-dragons so that they can defend the city against the full-on giant dragons. The half-dragons all have some sort of mutation (like wings or tails), so they are mostly hiding because CRAZY MOBS.
If you are looking for romance, don't hold your breath - Lucian barely makes an appearance in this book. What you do get:
1) A fascinating exploration of gender. Seraphina visits a country where it's polite to ask, "How do I pronoun you?"
2) An introduction to the half-dragons from Seraphina's garden. There are a lot of them. Too many, in my opinion - it was hard to keep them all straight.
3) A power struggle with Jannoula. Remember the scary one locked in the cottage in book one? Well, she's back! And she's PISSED.
Overall, Shadow Scale was not what I expected. I was hoping for a continuation of the first book, with more Lucian and Uncle Orma. Neither of them feature largely in this book, but Rachel Hartman is amazing, and I love Seraphina forever and ever no matter what.
Full disclosure: I bought it with my own money because SERAPHINA 4EVA!
