Title: The Iron King
Author: Julie Kagawa
I fucking hated this book.
The Iron King got really great reviews in a bunch of industry magazines, so maybe I'm missing something. But here's the deal for you.
Meghan's father disappeared when she was young. Now she's 16, and she's just discovered that her best friend is Puck, and she's part fairy. OMG part fairy?? I've never heard of that premise before, except in a million other books that are all better than this one.
So anyhow, the fairies steal Megan's little brother, and Puck brings her to fairyland so she can find the kid. He should not have done this, because Meghan is way too stupid to survive in fairyland.
At this point, an endless series of episodic adventures begins, all of which follow the same pattern.
1) Someone smarter than Meghan gives her an ominous warning.
2) Meghan does the exact thing that she was JUST TOLD NOT TO DO.
3) Meghan gets chased by something.
4) You hope that Meghan will get eaten.
5) Your hopes are dashed as various creatures save her.
Over and over and OVER. Plus there's a tortured fairy prince who probably wants to kill her, but he's cute, so she doesn't really mind. PUKE.
If you want to read a really good YA fairy tale, try any or all of O.R. Melling's books, which are full of fucking awesome Irish folklore.
Do NOT buy this book.
Full Disclosure: Unfortunately, I paid cash money for this book.
